Red Crimson Cape; Children's Book Illustration

Description

Red Crimson Cape is a picture-book concept that retells Robin Hood for young readers, with Robin as a red fox wearing his father's crimson cape. During a forest drought, Sheriff Wolf hoards the only spring, and Robin, alongside Lady Marian the Rabbit, returns the water to the community by wit rather than theft. The book pairs full-spread narrative art with a character sheet and storyboard thumbnails, showing the complete arc from concept to finished spreads.

Project brief

01 What Red Crimson Cape; Children's Book Illustration needed

A picture book lives or dies on whether its hero reads at a glance and its world holds across every spread. The brief WOBL set itself: retell Robin Hood for children without the archery violence, keep a villain menacing without frightening early readers, and build a cast that stays consistent from cover to final page.

02 How the studio approached it

WOBL cast the story with animals, a red fox as Robin, a rabbit as Marian, a wolf as the Sheriff, so species carried personality before a single line was drawn. The crimson cape, an heirloom from Robin's father, gave the hero one readable silhouette. Warm forest palettes set the tone, and storyboard thumbnails locked the pacing before final art began.

03 What came out of it

The concept shipped as a twelve-image book package: cover, narrative spreads including the well and the cave scenes, a character sheet, and storyboard thumbnails.

Titled hero shot: the fox in his crimson cape in a sunlit forest clearing. Introduces the project and protagonist in one image.
The action peak: a high-energy group composition with many characters interacting.
Sheriff Wolf leaning smugly by the dry well while the forest animals look on. Introduces the villain and the drought stakes.
A moodier spread: the hero and Marian planning over a map inside a dark cave. Shows lighting and atmosphere range.
Final fox turnaround next to twelve expression sketches. Opens the process section of the case study.
Six black-and-white narrative panels. Closes the gallery by showing the storytelling groundwork.
